Etymology

Addercliff Adderclyf (f )1492, 1512 Comp 174, 208–9, Aderclyff c. 1540AOMB , Aldercliffe 1540MinAcct . Possibly 'cliff or bank where adders were found' (v. nǣddre , clif ), but the first el. may well be a shortened form of such OE  pers.ns. as Aldrēd as in Adderley (Sa 19), etc.
