Etymology
'Pybba 's stubble-field,' v. ersc . In illustration of the uncertainty as to the form of the name it may be noted that in a suit of 1290 (Ass ) the jury declared that the name of the vill was Pebeners and not Pebenes as stated by one of the parties. For the variation between b and p (cf. earlier Pypba ), b and v , and b and d we may compare the early forms of Pedmore (PN Wo 305–6), Pavenham (PN BedsHu 36), Bedgrove (PN Bk 166) and of Bobbingworth (supra 52). A lost Pebehale (13thStJohn ) in or near Stebbing contains the same personal name, perhaps deriving from the same man.
