Etymology

Potton Island, Great Potton is Magna Potting (e )1244AD , 1259–62 BM, Pottyng (e )1419MinAcct , 1578Rental , Pottyngore magna , pũa Pottyngore 1419MinAcct , Pottingwick alias Old Potting , New Potting 1612Depositions . Originally this was, perhaps, a singular name in -ing for Potton Creek, the first element being, possibly, a pers. name Pott (a ). Cf. Potton and Potsgrove (PN BedsHu 106, 131). The dialectal pot , 'a deep hole, especially in the bed of a river,' seems to be a north-country word (PN NRY 234).For gore v. Havengore supra 185–6. Part of the Potton Island, including Little Potton, is in Little Wakering parish.
