Etymology

'Woodland clearing where broom grows', from brōm and lēah , the later spellings showing the influence of brēmel 'bramble', cf. Brimley PN D 411, 467, 619, 626, and Brimley in Hawkchurch par. supra . There was once a chapel here: Capell ' S 'ci Mich 'is in man 'io de Bromele 1447Bodl , perhaps identical with 'chapel of Stoke Abbot '1378 Pat.
