Etymology

'Farmstead or settlement on the stream called *Hlȳde , the noisy one' from OE  *hlȳde (gen.sg. -an ) 'loud stream, torrent' (a derivative of OE  hlūd 'loud') and tūn. It is possible there is some alternation of the first el. with a synonymous form *Hlȳding (from *hlȳde with -ing 2 ). The stream in question rises near St Mary's Church (springs marked 6″) and flows S through the village to join R. Bride. Liddington W 282–3 is apparently identical in origin. The affixes are manorial. Litton was held by Ralph de Gorges in 1248 Chet freq to 1304 Ch, cf. also Elena de Gorges 1287 FF, John de Gorges 1314 Ass (Fry) and v. Hutch3 2749. The Cheyne family held (part of) the manor from the late 14th cent., cf. Ralph Cheyne 1388, 1392 Cl, 1401 Hutch3, William Chayny 1412, Alice Cheyne 1431 FA, and v. Hutch3 2749.
