Etymology

Coombe, Higher Coombe (SY 540915) & Lower Coombe (SY 536910), Cumb (e )1220 Cur, 1268 Drew, 1301 FF, Cumb (e ) juxta Ludeton 1316 Drew, Combe 1317 Drew, 1324 Ipm, 1392 Cl, 1432 Fine, Coumb 1317 Drew, Comb -Abbas , or Lower Comb , Comb -Temple , or Higher Comb 1774 Hutch1, Hr Combe & Lowr Combe 1811 OS, v. cumb 'valley'. According to Hutch3 2 751, Comb Abbas 'anciently belonged to some religious house', Comb Temple 'probably belonged to the Knight Templars, or Hospitallers'. Perhaps the former name is to be connected with the ½ knight's fee held at Ludinggeton (?Litton Cheney) by the abbess of Godestowe (Godstow O 26) in 1376 Pat.
