Etymology
'Source of the R. Toller ', from OE ǣwielm, ǣwylm 'river-spring'.The Toller , the old name for R. Hooke, rises in the long valley here and gives name to the pars. of Toller Fratrum and Toller Porcorum as well as to Tollerford in Frome Vauchurch par. all supra , v. RNs.infra . The earliest form cited occurs as a point in the Saxon bdy of Corscombe. The early affix Abbatis (Lat abbas 'abbot', gen.sg. abbatis ) alludes to the messuage and lands here held by Forde Abbey (Hutch3 292). Pinnys Toller recalls the Penne family 'of East Coker and Cheddington' who bought the manor in 1630 (Hutch3 292–3); for the same family cf. Penney's Hill Coppice in Chedington par. supra and Wyke Fm in Halstock par. supra . To the forms cited from 1551AddCh might be added the following from the same source: 'Abbot White dyd buyld a howse at…Tollerwilme…nowe the mantion house of the sayd ferme.'Note too in 1659WRO , also with reference to this place: 'We present to have the water cours brought forthe to the gret gate.'
