Etymology

Wellwood (ST 479040), Wellwood 1811 OS, 1863 Hutch3, earlier Welle 1086 DB (f. 77b), 1251–2 Fees, 1285 FA (p), 1327, 1332 SR both (p), Welles 1244Ass (p), Well 1340 NI (p), 1483 IpmR, 1486 Ipm, '(place at) the spring', v. w(i)ella, with the later addition of wood . For the DB identification, v. ThornDB and DBGazetteer: one hide in Welle is attached to the manor of Bochenham (= Buckham supra in this par.), cf. VCHDo 2133 where this DB form is wrongly identified with Wool par. 1 188 (hence its inclusion among the spellings cited loc. cit .). Several springs are marked 6″, all feeding a small stream flowing into R. Axe.
