Etymology

One of several places named from R. Piddle or Trent (v. RNs.infra ). The first part of the name Affa -, etc. probably represents a short form (Æffa , gen.sg. Æffan ) of the OE  pers.n. Ælffrið ; according to the charter dated 987 a certain Ælfriðus gave to Cerne Abbey the rus iuxta Pydelan 'farm next to the Piddle' of quatuor cassatos , this corresponding with the manor of four hides held here by the same abbey in DB; the form Ediue - shows confusion of the pers.n. with the OE  fem. pers.n. Ēadgifu .
