Quickbeam Hill
Early-attested site in the Parish of Ugborough
Historical Forms
- Quykbeme 1474 Ct 1479 Dartmoor
Etymology
The OE compound cwicbeam existed, but it is uncertain to what tree it refers (v. NED s. v .). In south-western dialects, however, the 'quickbeam' is always used of the mountain ash. A single tree of this kind, though small, would have been a conspicuous landmark on the bleak open moorland here.
