Cantrell
Early-attested site in the Parish of Ugborough
Historical Forms
- Canterhulle 1330 SR
- Canterhill 1333 SR
Etymology
Possibly canter is for cantel by dissimilation. If so, we may perhaps compare Tregantle (Co), Argantel 1086 DB, Tregantel 1303, 1306 FA, in which the second element is probably a Cornish word corresponding to the Welsh cantel (l ), 'circle, rim.' Cantrell is on the slopes of a circular hill.
