Titterton

Early-attested site in the Parish of Coldridge

Historical Forms

  • Toyterton 1303 FA 1540 FF
  • Toytirton 1346 FA
  • Toiterton 1350 Ipm

Etymology

The place stands high, with a good view down the Taw and Professor Ekwall suggests that this may be from OE  tȳtera tūn , 'farm of the watchmen,' tȳtere being an unrecorded derivative of OE  tȳtan , 'to peer forth.' For the curious phonological development, cf. Loyton infra 536.
