Etymology

Dr Ritter suggests OE  Lēofgȳðestān , 'stone of a woman named Lēofgȳð .' v. stan . Professor Ekwall suggests a pers. name Lēofede , which is actually on record as Leouede in Devon (Earle 262). In that case the second element would be tun .
