Etymology

This place corresponds to the manor of Bochelanda , which was held by one Odeman (i.e. Wodeman ) TRE (DB f. 396 b ). The modern name is to be associated with the family of Beare . Cf. John Beare of Bearscombe, M.P. for Tavistock in 1685 (DA 42, 277).
