Historical Forms

- Gyng(e)lond 1415–30 Ct
Etymology
The modern form is clearly the result of folk-etymology. The true first element may be the stream-name Ginge (Ekwall RN 172). This should give Mod. [gindʒ]. Wallenberg (StudNP 2, 92) suggests connexion with OE genge , 'privy' (Nb dial, ging , 'dung').
