Etymology

Probably 'Hætt's valley', v. hop 1 , the first element being an unrecorded OE  nickname Hætt from OE  hæt (t ) 'hat', cf. ON  Hǫttr .Alternatively, Ekwall's suggestion (Studies 177) that it is OE  hætse 'witch' is also to be thought of.
