Etymology

Perhaps 'Lang's hill', v. dūn , with some confusion of the second element with denu and later replacement by tūn . Cf. Longsdon (PN St 97) and for the OE  pers.n. *Lang cf. Feilitzen 308. This seems preferable to Ekwall's suggestion (DEPN) that the ridge was first called Lang , to which was added an explanatory dūn .
