Etymology

'Ē(a)din's sloping bank', v. ofer 2 , the village being situated on the fairly steeply sloping right bank of the Derwent. For this OE pers.n. cf. Great Edstone (PN NRY 58), Edge Knoll (PN NbDu 71) and Studies 7–8. For the pronunciation cf. the surname Ensor .
