Etymology

Barber Booth formerly Whitemoorley Booth, Whitmoreley 1579 Lanc, vaccar ' in Eydall vocat ' Whit (e )morley 1590DuLaMB , 1607DuLa , Whitmorlie booth 1625Rental et passim to 1824ParReg ; 'white moor', v. hwīt , mōr 1 , to which was added lēah . Cf. Whitemoor Clough infra 89; Barber booth 1675Add , 1767 Burdett, which is named from the Barber family, well evidenced from early times in the manor, cf. John and Rich . Barber for a booth in Heydall 15th Yeatman. It is most unlikely that this booth was the modern Barber Booth, for connections of the family with both Grindsbrook Booth and Ollerbrook Booth have been noted in the 16th century (1561 Pat, 1562 Lanc). For the significance of booth cf. Lady Booth Brook supra 10.
