Etymology

Somersall Hall, Somersale , Somershale , Somershall Ed 1 DbCh (p), Ed 1WollCh (p), 1318HarlCh (p), 1330Ass (p), 1332Middleton (p), 1349 DbCh (p), 1485WollCh , identical with Somersal Herbert infra 604.It is noteworthy that all the early forms are (p) and it is possible that it is in fact a transferred name from that place. It might seem to be too coincidental that two examples of an otherwise unique name should be found in the same county.
