Etymology

'Farm by a swaying tree', v. wæfre , tūn , cf. Wharton 2213, with which this p.n. is sometimes confused, e.g. in 1281 'the defendants said there were two Wavertons and claimed to know which was intended', Court 35. It is confused with Weaverham 3205, in Hatton Church by Waverham 17 (1724) NotCestr, v. ChetOS viii362.
