Etymology

Either 'the home of Cēnfrið's people', from -ingahām and the OE  pers.n. Cēnfrið , as suggested in DEPN, or 'the village Cēnfriðing ', from hām with an -ing 2 formation upon the pers.n., v. Altrincham 7supra . Dr von Feilitzen suggests that the various forms of this p.n. have evolved from two developments of OE  *Cēnfriðing (a )-hām , (a) late OE  *Kenverðingham (metathesis of -frið to -ferð , voicing of f ), (b) late OE  *Kemverðingham (-n - > -m - before f , v ). From (a) would come *Keverðing - (loss of -n - before f , v ) > *Kev ðingham (-er - > - -) > Kerðing - (reduction of v ð - to - -) whence Kerthingham , Kerdingham and Kerringham (-rd - > -rr -). From (b) would come *Kem ðing - (with reduction of -er - to - - and loss of interconsonantal -f -, -v -) > *Kem ing - (with reduction of -m ð - to -m -) > Kerming - (with metathesis) > Kerning - (with assimilation of nasals).
