Etymology

Probably 'Ūfegēat's part of Shocklach', from the OE  pers.n. Ūfegēat (v. Feilitzen 420 n.1), but possibly 'Wulfgēat's part…', from the OE  pers.n. Wulfgēat (v. Feilitzen 342, 419). Dr. von Feilitzen prefers Ūfegēat for this p.n. There is no indication of the particular man who gave his name to this place, but the names Vluiet (< Wulfgēat ) and Vuiet (< Ūfegēat , but possibly Wulfgēat ) appear among the TRE tenants of Ch in DB, and he may have been one of these. Cf. Onyoteshay 3140, Wolfotesrudyng 27supra , and Adam son of Ouyt 1288 Court 233, William filius Ovieth Gheri , William filius Ouieti Gheri H3, 1236AddCh 43899, 43903.
