Etymology

Sydney (110–722563), [sid-], Sidenhale 1260 Court (p), Sidenhal 1289 ib, Sydenhale 1387, 1478, 1541 ChRR, Sydenhall 1433 ib, Sidney Meadow & Sidney Orchard 1841TA , and cf. the Sidneys , the Sydnes , the Sidnes 1681 to 1731 Cre (the local surname of a branch of the Shaw family (cf. Hall o' Shaw supra ) at Sandbach, v. 2273), and cf. also the forms given under Sydney Ho 15supra , which suggest the identification with Sydney of the p.n. forms given in Court. The identification is also suggested by the appearance, in the action in Court 149, of the Knights Hospitallers, and of Richard Underwood, local tenants (cf. Underwood Fm infra ). The name means 'at the wide nook', v. sīd (wk.dat. sg. sīdan ) 'spacious, roomy, wide', halh (dat.sg. hale ). It may recur at Faddiley Bank 143infra .
