Etymology

Rock Ferry (109–335868), a district in Tranmere 257infra and Higher Bebington, including Rock Lane & Rock Park (cf. Rock Fm 258infra ). The various names are recorded as del Fere 1350 Sheaf (p), passagium et batillagium de Bebynton 1357ChFor ('the toll and ferryboat of Bebington'), house called the Rocke 1644 Sheaf, Rocke house land and ferryboate 1646 ib, the Rock Ferry 1757 ib, 1819 Orm2, the Royal Rock Ferry 1805 Sheaf, Rock Ferry House , Rock Cottage 1831 Bry, Rock Park 1843TA , 'ferry at the Rock', from rokke and ferja , with park , lane . Rock Lane leads to Rock Ferry, and gave name to Rock Lane Cottage 1842 OS, Firbob Hall 1831 Bry. The rock was an outcrop on the Wirral shore of Mersey. Cf. Tranmere Ferry 258infra .
