Etymology

From an unidentified dithematic p.n. or pers.n. or a disyllabic cpd. and lēah 'a wood, a glade, a clearing', with myln , hǣð , pōl 1 . Professor Löfvenberg suggests an OE  cpd. *wīn -tān 'vine-shoot', referring to some wild climbing or trailing plant, analogous with OE  mistel -tān 'mistletoe'. The pool is a mill-dam, and gives its name to Pool Fm, and to Pool Head (lost, 110–753570), 1831 Bry, le poole heade 1598AddRoll , cf. Pool , Pool Field & Pool Meadow 1840TA , pratum Poole , Pooles Mead 1588AddRoll , le greate pooles , le litle poole 1600ib , v. pōl 1 , hēafod , mǣd .
