Etymology

This manor has undergone successive changes of name. It was first a Foliot Manor and is called in the chartulary of St Mary de Pré, Leicester, Foliots in the 15th cent. (VCH ). It was in the hands of Ralph Cheindut who married the Foliot heiress in 1235 (Fees 463) and is called after that family as late as 1346 (u. s .) but in that very passage it is said that it was formerly in the possession (apparently only temporary) of John Botetourte and this explains the name given in 1325 (u. s .). In 1330 (Pat) it was demised in fee to Wm Latimer, husband of Elizabeth Latymer , daughter of John Botetourte and hence came to be known by its last name. For Isenhamstede v. Chenies supra .
