Etymology

Separate forms for Winslow are Wendelesclivam c. 1150 (17th) Salt Soc. Coll. iii, Wendelcliva 1189 GlastonInq, Wend (e )lescliue 1242–3 Fees, Wendesclive 1264–5 InqMisc. *Wendelesclif was originally the name of a separate estate, named from the escarpment on the lower slopes of which Ashbury is situated, and *Cyningestūn that of the settlement a little to the N. of Ashbury. The addition of Wendescleve etc. to the forms for Kingstone would distinguish it from Kingston Lisle (372) about 4 miles to the E. Kingstone means 'king's farm', v. tūn .Winslow is identical with wendlesclife Gl 2, 93, the OE name of Cleeve Cloud, N.E. of Cheltenham. The two names are generally explained as 'Wendel's cliff' from the pers.n. discussed BdHu 114–5.
