Etymology

( 1833 OS ) , cf. Hargreaves e.16VCH X66 , Hargrave Coppice 1771SBL 6212 . There are better - recorded instances of Hargrove and Hargrave in various counties , and the first element is probably hār ' hoar ' . Colour adjectives are common as qualifiers with * grove ' words . The terms grāf(a) and grǣfe interchange in place - names : both are likely to refer to coppiced woodland .
