Whitmore Cottages and Whitmore Lane

Other OS name in the Parish of Baschurch

Etymology

. The lane and the three cottages at the end of it are shown , but not named , on TAMap . One of the fields abutting the lane is Whit Mill Leasow on the Foxall map , and Whitmill Lane occurs 1792SBL 17439 . Mrs H . G . Letts has informed us that the cottages were demolished in 1960 , but the lane continued to be maintained by householders living near the village end of it . Locally the name Whitmore Lane is rejected , and the true name is considered to be World 's End Lane , which Shrewsbury Post Office recognises as an official address . World 's End is appropriate to the cottage - site at which the lane ends , but no early references have been found for it . Whitmore is probably a conflation of Whitmill with the Moor names for which v. Moor Fm supra . Whitmill may have referred to a windmill . In 1792SBL 17439 there is a piece of land called Phillips 's Whitmill . Gazetteer lists Phillips St in Baschurch village , which may contain the same surname .
