, 1865 OS , Stealend 1706Ct , Stile End 1823 M, 1839TA , probably OE  stōl ' stool, seat ' in allusion to the resemblance of the end of The Band (supra ) to a stool or seat ; Steal - would be the dial . form of stōl , and as this is also the dial . form of stigel ' stile ' , it has been in some spellings replaced by stile .
