Etymology

( lost ) , the Buckels 1657Warr , Buckles 1823 M, Buckles Bridge 1745 NWm 107, 147, named from the local family of Buc (k )le 1560–1731 PR(B)passim ; in 1594 NCWills 213 Sir Cuthbert Buckle , Lord Mayor of London and a native of Stainmore left £ 20 ' tomending of highways between Mayden Castle and Bayllye Bridge ' ; this is the low road from Stainmore to Kaber and Belah Bridge(ii, 70supra ) and Buckles Bridge is probably the one now called Oxenthwaite Bridge .
