Tom Winder's Loom

Other OS name in the Parish of Askham

Etymology

, 1859OS , doubtless named from one of the two Thomas Winders whose births are recorded in 1788 PR 189 and 1808 ib 218 , or , according to a note in 1859OS , from an insane man who committed suicide here ; this is the name of a small back - water of the Lowther , and loom is therefore from lum(m) ' pool ' , as in Andrew's Loom (ii, 184supra ) .
