Etymology

is Hoggs moat 1656Dugdale . This is the site of the ancient castle in Castle Lanesupra . Dugdale ( 687 ) speaks of “ Hoggs moat , which I conceive is intended Odingsells moat , but by corrupt pronunciation now so termed ; for I have seen the name of Odingsells very antiently written Hoginsells , ” — a somewhat doubtful etymology .
