Etymology

( 6 ″ ) is le Pryours Hacking 1544 LP, waste called Hockings 1544 Monast . The Prior is presumably the Prior of Kenilworth who had lands in this parish . What a hacking is we do not know . It may have been a woodland term for a patch of wood where there has been hacking or chopping . Cf. Hackwood (PN Nth 20) and Hakkedwod (1384 DbAS xxii) in Baslow (Db) .
