Etymology

The hundred was named from Radefelde 1335–9Clare , Radfe (i )ld 1504, 16thPembroke , Radfyld ib., Radfilld 17th ib., Wrat Field 1815Pembroke , Rad Field c. 1840TA . This was 'in campo de Burgh' near the land of Batemans Chantry and north of Widgham, stretching apparently into Dullingham. Probably 'red open country,' v. feld .Patches of gravel on the chalk make the soil look rather reddish.
