Botolph , a monastic leader who flourished in East Anglia in the later 7th century , was by the end of the 11th century regarded as a patron saint of boundaries . It may be significant for the church 's dedication that Wardley is a border parish , v. R . Morris , Churches in the Landscape , London 1989 , 217 – 9 . The church appears to be an ancient foundation . The earliest surviving masonry is no later than c1175 .
