Etymology

, 1846, 1863 White , Hundegate in Ryhale 13 VCH (p), Hang Gate 1943Map , literally ' road frequentedby dogs ' , v. hund , gata ; but such a name is more usual in a town ( cf. Hungate in Lincoln, L 175 , Hounds Gate in Nottingham, Nt18 ) and this example may be from a surn . , cf. Mr Hungates Close 1634 in Uppingham f. ns . ( b ) . However , the 13th century form does imply that Ryhall had its own Hungate .
