Etymology

It is Tornekowe 1541 LP, Turnecouse Wood 1610 Speed , which is perhaps from OE  þorn or þyrne ' a thorn-tree ' with Scand skógr ' a wood ' ( with metathesis -scow > -cow (s ) ) , but earlier forms are needed . The wood is beside the county boundary , cf. Harethornes in f. ns . ( b ) infra .
