- Gunwell Stye Way l17 Terrier
Etymology
( local ) , Gun Hill c1850Anc , Gunwell Stye Way l17Terrier . Ostensibly a p.n. with OE wella ' a spring, a stream ' but if so , the first el . presents problems . The Scand pers.n. Gunni is the most obvious choice for this but it is rare to find a Scand pers. n. compounded with OE wella . Gunni may have replaced an earlier OE pers. n. ( as in Bracewell YW 638 ) , but as the pers. n. Gunni is also probable in Gundale in neighbouring Ketton f. ns . ( b ) , it may be that the Empingham name is also Gundale ' Gunni's valley ' , v. sty-way .
