Etymology

, Shaleham 1272 Ch, Shallum Dyke Pightle ,Shallum Marsh , Shallum Wall 1838TA ; v. *scealu ' shallow ' , ēa and hām or hamm , i.e . ' the hām or hamm by the shallow stream ' . Cf. *sceald in Scealdan fleot 949 ( 14 Sawyer 543 ) BCS 879 ( ' the shallowfleet ' ) and Scealdeburnan 904 ( 12 Sawyer 1286 ) BCS 611 ( ' theshallow burn ' ) . Dyke and Wall in the TA suggest that by 1838 , the watercourse had been deepened for drainage .
