Holme Fm

Other OS name in the Parish of West Rasen

Historical Forms

  • Smiths Fm 1828 Bry

Etymology

is Smiths Fm 1828 Bry , presumably named from a family long - established in the parish , cf. Walter Smyth 1337 Cl . It is possible that the modern name is represented by Hulme 1203 FF , holm e13MC , Holm a1244MC , Holm ( e ) pl290 MC , le Holm 1337 Cl , for the farm is situated beside the R . Rase . However , there is a HOLME HILL , 1824 O , 1828 Bry , 1830 Gre , on a spur of land between the R . Ancholme and the R . Rase , so that it is difficult to decide to which the early forms belong , though the contexts suggest that it is the former . Both are clearly derived from ON  holmr ' an island of land , a piece of higher ground amidst marsh , etc . ' .
