Etymology

, cf. the howke 1601Terrier , (the ) Hook 1684, 1721Monson ,1767Stubbs , 1790, 1805Monson . The forms are late , but the earliest spelling seems to suggest that it is comparable to Hook, PNYW 220 , and is derived from OE  *hūc ( v. hōc ' a hook, a bend ' ) , referring to its situation lying low , but with a bend in the Old R . Ancholme to the west . The later spellings certainly suggest association with hook from hōc .
