Etymology

This name has been noted four times already in north L , v. PN L 4, xiv , where the interpretation of The Scallows Hall,PN L 3, 4 , is corrected . Further examples occur in PN L 4 , 13 – 4 , 102 and 111 – 12 , as well as Scalehau in Scawby f. ns . infra . All mean ' thehill, mound with a shieling, a temporary hut ' , v. skáli , haugr . ON  skáli is common in the north - west of the country , but is rare in the East Midlands .
