Etymology

is Mawkes Hall 1828Bry, Maux Hall 1830 Gre . There are two further examples of this name in Yarborough Wapentake , Maux Hall in Great Limber and Mauxhall in Stallingborough , and it may be tentatively suggested that it is a derogatory nickname for a delapidated building ' MaggotsHall ' , the first el . then being dial . mawk ' a maggot ' , v. EDD s.v . The name does not seem to have been noted previously in the Survey and so far occurs only in a restricted corner of north - east L .
