The first two spellings suggest that the second el . is court ' a large house, a manor-house ' , while all the rest are from cot ' acottage, etc . ' . It is impossible to be certain , therefore , whether the original meaning is ' the west manor house ' or ' the west cottage ' , v. west , court , cot , especially when the different forms are almost contemporary .
