Earlier forms are needed to suggest a certain etymology , but the name may perhaps be comparable to Costall, Costoll PN O 437 , where other examples of the compound are quoted . The source would be OE  cot-stall ' the site of a cottage ' , in the present case in the pl . The late spellings in -hills and Gorse Hills are obviously rationalisations .
