Etymology

, 1844TA , 1863, 1877 White , 1968Surv . Early maps indicate that it is Crown Point 1781Terrier , 1795Nichols, 1806 Map, 1815 Nichols, 1824 O, 1846 White , cf. Crown Point Gap 1801 Map ( v. gap ) ; but Blue Point coexisted with Crown Point Close 1844TA , 1968Surv , which suggests that Blue Point and Crown Point may have been adjacent features , with Blue representing ON  blár ( ME  blo ) in the latter 's extended sense ' cold, exposed ' and Crown as either from eModE  crowne used of a rounded summit ( v. OED s. v. crown IV 18 ; earliest citation in this sense 1583 ) or OE  cran , cron ' acrane, a heron ' , since Crown Point is beside a stream which flows east into R. Witham , v. point .
