, 1877 White , Thomley Hall 1846, 1863 ib(v. hall), tomlowe 1343LCh , Tomley 1606, 1625Terrier ; the generic was originally hlāw ' a hill, a burial mound ' , while the specific may be þūma ' a thumb ' used in a transferred sense such as ' a dwarf, a hobgoblin ' ( cf. Tom Thumb ) , hence ' the dwarf's or hobgoblin's mound ' , perh . a p.n. recording an early local superstition . Prof . R. Coates suggests as an alternative specific the OE adj . tōm ' empty, void of contents ' .
