Shrave Wood

Other OS name in the Parish of Newland

Etymology

, 1830 M , probably a local word connected with SCy  dial. shrave (y ) , ' poor,rocky soil ' , and St dial . shraff ' refuse from pot-works ' ; some sense such as ' refuse or spoil from iron-mining ' might well be appropriate here , as Shrave Wood ( grid point 156 – 603051 ) was near old iron - workings ( now called The Blisters ) ; Yellow Shraf (224supra ) was similarly situated .
